Layer 2 · Org Chart & Directory · Last reviewed May 2026

A Pingboard-style org chart, sourced from your Microsoft 365 data.

Quick answer: Athena's Org Chart & Directory webpart auto-populates from Microsoft Graph: job titles, departments, managers, photos. Three layout modes, per-field manual overrides for stale Azure AD data, toggle between chart view and searchable directory. £290/month per tenant. Unlimited users. A Pingboard, Sift, or ChartHop alternative for organisations already paying for Microsoft 365.

If your Azure AD has the data, why are you also paying a per-user fee to a separate vendor to redraw it? Athena reads the same Graph endpoint Microsoft uses, presents it beautifully inside your existing SharePoint intranet, and lets admins fix stale fields without breaking the rest.

Capabilities

What Athena's Org Chart does.

Auto-populates from Microsoft Graph

Job title, department, manager hierarchy, and profile photo, all pulled from the same source of truth your IT team already maintains.

Three layout modes

Auto-tree (classic hierarchy), department lanes (horizontal grouping), and manual drag (admin positions individuals for non-standard structures like dotted-line reporting).

Per-field manual override system

Fix a stale Azure AD field (wrong job title, wrong department, mislabelled region) without affecting the rest of the Graph-sourced record. Overridden fields are tagged with a pink OVERRIDE badge. “Refresh from 365” preserves overrides.

Chart-to-directory toggle

The same data renders as a hierarchical chart OR a searchable, filterable directory grid. One webpart, both views.

Department and region filters

Chip-style filters at the top of the chart for fast subset navigation.

SVG chart with pan, zoom, and drag

Large org charts remain navigable, not flat unreadable PNGs.

Render-time photo cache

Profile photos resolve at display time via a shared cache, avoiding the SharePoint property-blob limit that breaks SaveCoAuth on 50+ person org charts.

Tenant-wide or group-scoped photo source

Choose to show everyone, or just members of an Entra group.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

SharePoint Online includes a basic People webpart and an Organization browser tied to Microsoft 365 user data. However, these built-in surfaces are limited in layout, branding, and the ability to correct stale Azure AD data. For organisations that need a polished, navigable org chart with manual override capability and consistent design, dedicated tooling is typically required. Athena adds a purpose-built Org Chart and Directory webpart that auto-populates from the same Microsoft Graph data the built-in tools use, but with three layout modes, manual overrides, and full theming.
